JOLIPESTAL TROPHY

31/01/14 – AH (Extracted off Lanark Rocks 14#4 – Log-in HERE)

This is a tale of how one should never feel too smug.

There I was, as Secretary of Lanark CC, feeling good because I had sent out invitations to other clubs re the JOLIPESTAL competition and had received their acceptances to participate. I had even bought all the prizes prior to Xmas and when the draw was made in January, I forwarded a copy to all clubs concerned. All the sweeties were bought: the iceman was alerted to the draw sheet for him to complete the blackboard so what else was there to do but to go along and enjoy the competition. I was feeling very smug.

On the morning of the Jolipestal competition I received a call at 11 am from Douglas CC indicating they could not field a rink for the second session. They gave their profound apologies but they obviously had a grave mis-communication problem. However it meant we were a team down with no time to find 4 players! So, there I was, the calm Secretary was no longer calm! “Two minds are better than one” I thought so I phoned the Treasurer for advice—Bob was no use at all but he listened to me (twice I pestered Bob on the Phone—bless him). In the end I decided that, as hosts, Lanark would need to stand-down their second rink (which was mine!) so I frantically phoned those members to stop them making a wasted journey. I then made my way to the ice rink and the competition began.

Bob’s team provided an impressive +8 shots which added a bitter taste to the mouth know-ing that we didn’t have a second rink to capitalise upon this. However the story of the competition must lie with Lesmahagow men who provided a +15 shots after the first game. They confidently walked off the ice stating to the 2nd rink of Lesmahagow men “Well, it’s in the bag then”. During the second session Lesmahagow men were playing Coulter. Not an easy match but what a powerful lead they were given by their first team.

Interest was focussed on the Lesmahagow –v– Coulter game and after 4 ends Coulter were 10-1 up. What a turn up for the books.. As we all watched the fantastic comeback from Coulter I also became aware of the quiet lead Lanark Ladies were making and right up to the end the competition could be won by Coulter or Lanark Ladies. The scores were ping-ponging from Coulter to Lanark Ladies etc and, for the spectators, we had sore heads trying to keep up with the mental arithmetic. However, in the end Lanark Ladies finished +12 shots (well done ladies) to Coulter who finished +14 shots and who retained the tro-phy. Lesmahagow men finished +4 overall!

Yes—it doesn’t do well to feel smug after handing over +15 shots to your second team.

c’est la vie
