TURKEY SHOOT
As the first fund-raiser towards LIR’s 50th birthday celebrations next season, the Committees (both Lanarkshire Ice Rink and Ice Sports Club) together with Marion Craig (Board of Directors), decided to organise a Turkey Shoot.
This was a strange decision because it was an idea that somebody mentioned yet nobody had ever attended a Turkey Shoot so we were working in the dark! Well, we were up for that……
The Turkey Shoot was held on Sunday 4th December and 80 members had pre-purchased their tickets but we were delighted to welcome members who turned up on the day so that approximately 90 people were in the bar area.
Alistair Smith organised the turkey – a beautifully feathered, and decapitated, white turkey that was portraying a new ‘head’ image of our Umpire for the day, Drew Moffat.
And the eight finalists were:
Stuart Love (of ‘restaurant fame’), Sarah McAteer, Jim Motion, Guy Campbell, Christine Hall (Winner), Archie Craig, Margaret Harcourt & Douglas Burke along with the ‘ICE TURKEYs’ (or should that be fairies?)
Unfortunately we had a delay to proceedings as the ice man had flooded the ice rink following the figure skating session in the morning and the ice required more time to freeze. However, being curlers, we love to socialise and members enjoyed the drink, chat and food until we managed to get started at around 4.15pm.
Eight ‘shooters’ took to the ice – two in each corner – with each one throwing two stones each. They were trying to get close to the turkey (positioned in the middle of the ice rink) and it wasn’t as easy as it sounded because it was a dead throw – no sliding was allowed! We held 8 such sessions with each session winner proceeding to the Grand Final. We also held a children’s session because we were aware there were young beady eyes watching their parents who were itching to have a go!
Jim, the ice man, provided some amusing music throughout the session ie the shooters were throwing their stones to Mission Impossible, The Birdie Song etc.
Now, when the shooters were doing their business on the ice George Strang, with microphone in hand, was ensuring that the spectators were placing their bets on all the sessions. George captivated and amused the spectators with his wit and the money/bets flowed in.
The Grand Final provided our Turkey Shooter winner of the year – congratulations go to Christine Hall from Avondale Heather CC.
This fund-raising event netted a grand sum of £1177.
However, such events are only successful due to the hard work of some people so a big thank you must go to the following people:
Committee members: Drew Moffat, George Strang, Marion Craig, Lilias Hyslop, Anne Hood, Alistair Smith, Fiona Motion, Tom McGregor, Alan Turner, Helen Drummond
Jim (ice man) – for the ice and music
Janette (office) – for her administrative support
Stewart – catering
Kathleen and staff – bar
Helper (steward) – Jack Hood
Tote organisers – David Hall, Mary Strang, John King
Most of all, thank you to everybody who supported this event. Without you, it wouldn’t have been possible.
