Culers Matter – We Urge You To Vote At This Year’s AGM
Dear Member,
Notice is hereby given that the 183rd Annual General Meeting of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club will be held online using Zoom’s webinar platform on Saturday 26 June 2021 at 2pm with proceedings broadcast live from our office in Edinburgh.
The decision to hold the AGM virtually was announced on our website, social media, and emailed to all members we hold an email address for on 23 April 2021. Click for the official announcement
There are two points for members to note for this year’s AGM. They are:
- Members who wish to attend the virtual AGM must pre-register by 2pm on Friday 25 June 2021 to receive a secure link and password to join the meeting. You will be able to join the AGM from any computer, tablet, or smartphone device. If you do not pre-register you will not be able to attend the virtual AGM.
- Eligible Members must vote in advance by proxy either online or by post. There is no exception to this as voting will not be available to attendees during the webinar, so please vote in advance. Below is a diagram showing the ways eligible members can vote.
In addition to the regular business of the AGM, members are being asked to approve an increase in subscriptions for the 2022-23 season to £25 for Adults and £10 for Juniors (an increase of £5, and £3, respectively). The reasons behind this proposal by the board are twofold. Firstly, we have held subscriptions at the same price since 2018, which in real terms results in a loss in overall value. Secondly, the sport faces numerous challenges as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic; not least attracting new members and developing the grassroots. The additional revenue this increase creates will be directly committed to development work, to ensure we get more people on ice, to try curling sessions and signing up as members of Scottish Curling.
Members are being asked to adopt a number of updates to the Memorandum and Articles of Association and Byelaws, this will modernise and update these governing documents in line with current practices. There are a few items that have been singled out as they are more fundamental and include: a change to the voting age from 18 to 16 in line with other Scottish elections, introduction of the position of Junior Vice President and changes to the way Local Clubs can propose motions and resolutions for consideration at a General Meeting.
There are also two motions from clubs, one asking members to not change the presidential structure of RCCC this year and one seeking to make the Ladies Branch President a director on the board. There are also a dozen proposed changes to the Rules of the Game being put to the members at the AGM.
Finally, there is the matter of elections for Director and Vice President positions, involving four and two candidates respectively.
Only members aged 18 or over who have paid a full subscription for the 2020-21 season (that is, Ordinary Members, Honorary (Playing) Members, and Junior Members aged 18 and over), are eligible to vote as defined in Article 2.2 and Bye-Law 3.1 of the Memorandum and Articles of Association and Bye Laws. Eligible members can only vote online through our membership database, or by completing a paper voting form (sent to those we do not hold an email address for).
Voting opens online through our membership database from 3pm on Friday 4 June 2021. Simply log in to your account and you will be presented with the online voting form. Please note that if you share an email address only the person marked as the “primary user” will be able to vote online (one vote per email address). We therefore ask you to register another email address. Please email office@scottishcurling.org or contact your Club Secretary/Administrator if you need assistance.
Online and postal voting closes at 2pm on Thursday 24 June 2021.
If you have any issues with pre-registering for the virtual AGM or you wish to submit your apologies please email office@scottishcurling.org
Best wishes,
Bruce Crawford
Chief Executive Officer
