CONGRATULATIONS to Ian Reid and Tom Steele who became our new Pairs Champions tonight in a thrilling final against Brian Stephenson and Hugh Campbell (who was substituting for Frank Caddell who is ill).
Ian and Tom got off to a good start with a 3 at the first end but Brian and Hugh quickly stepped up their game and pulled back 2 shots in the next end then went on to win the 3rd end with another 2 shots. Game On! Ian and Tom took 2 shots at each of the next two ends – score: 7-4 but then Brian and Hugh came back and some superb shots were witnessed in the gallery. Brian and Hugh took the 6th end with a 2 then were holding 2 shots in the 7th end before Ian, with last stone, did a double raise to knock out one of their stones thus peeling the game. The competition went to an extra end and Hugh drew a lovely shot to the button with guards in front. Ian’s tactic was to open up the front of house whilst Brian’s was to guard the stone – however, one guard failed to cover the stone thus allowing Ian in to take the shot away with a lovely stone. Undaunted, Brian then played two terrific shots to take out the shot stone and leave his stones in front of house for a simple raise to win. Unfortunately his stone was slightly too heavy thus Ian and Tom claimed victory who had a ‘biter’ in the 12’..
Congratulations to the finalists – it was a terrific final – each player having thrown 32 stones each and sweeping so they will be tired tonight!
